The Toronto Blue Jays are contesting Creighton University’s use of a “Bluejay” in their new logo, saying that it looks too close to the logo that Toronto has had for years.
The MLB team has filed a notice to oppose the trademarking bid and discussions between Toronto and Creighton University are ongoing. Both parties are trying to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
The Creighton Blue Jays debuted their new logo in 2013 when the school moved from the Missouri Valley Conference to the Big East Conference to improve their standing in NCAA Basketball. A “Bluejay” has been placed on Creighton’s home court and is also featured on memorabilia that is being sold to the public. The team’s old logo did not feature a “Bluejay,” as it only featured a bold ‘C.’
The Blue Jays are claiming that this logo will lead people to believe that everything Creighton sells is approved by them.
