Brazil and Argentina are the top favorites to win the 2014 FIFA World Cup

There’s no bigger tournament than the FIFA World Cup and the sportsbooks take advantage of this to attract business from casual and avid fans alike. The outright winner of the tournament is usually the bet that attracts the most money, so here’s a look at the teams favored to emerge victorious in Brazil.

The team that has been favored to win this tournament for a while has been Brazil. They will be at home, their roster is very talented and they have experienced what is like to win a tournament recently.

It was not a World Cup, but winning last year’s Confederations Cup was pretty impressive, as the event featured opponents like Spain, Italy and Uruguay, so to prevail in an emphatic way was remarkable and is one of the reasons why Brazil is at +200 to win the World Cup as well.

The team with the next best odds is Argentina at +325. They are in the opposite half of the draw to Brazil, which makes a final between the two teams a likely outcome.

Argentina’s road to the quarterfinals of the tournament is relatively easy but this is the instance where they have failed in three of the last four World Cups. Scoring goals will not be a problem but their defense could be a problem.

Germany (+450) and Spain (+475), despite being the defending World Cup champions and back-to-back European champions round out the top four. Both teams have been successful lately but the difficulty of traveling to South America can’t be ignored, since no team from outside of the continent has won a World Cup when traveling to South, Central or North America.

Brazil’s dominance in the Confederations Cup last year proved how difficult it is to visit them. Therefore, Germany, Spain and other leading European contenders are fighting an uphill battle in this tournament. Both have enough talent to lift the World Cup, but history can’t be ignored.
